The Regional Order of Biologists of Emilia-Romagna and Marche (OBERM - Ordine dei Biologi dell’Emilia-Romagna e delle Marche) represents and supports biology professionals working in the fields of health, environment, research, and food safety. Our mission is to promote and enhance the pivotal role of biologists by placing them at the heart of multidisciplinary training programs and fostering collaboration with institutional and professional stakeholders within a One Health perspective.

At Labotec 2025, we will bring our commitment to building professional networks, monitoring complex phenomena, and promoting best practices across the many branches of applied biology.
A dedicated booth will be available throughout the event, featuring representatives from the Order and two Nutritionist Biologists offering brief, free consultations for the public.

Session overview

Scientific knowledge is expanding rapidly, accompanied by swift technological progress that has brought enormous benefits to public health — but has also introduced new challenges and emerging risks. In this context, the One Health approach is crucial to maintaining a balance between scientific advancement, innovation, and sustainability.

The workshop will focus on two key areas — antibiotic resistance and genome sequencing — which, though once niche scientific topics, have now become central to public health and have tangible impacts on everyday life.

Talk 1 - “The Silent Pandemic of Antimicrobial Resistance: The Role of Microbiology Laboratories in a One Health Perspective”. Speaker: Dr. Giulia Lombardi. This presentation will focus on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), now recognized as one of the top 10 global public health threats and increasingly referred to as a “silent pandemic.” It will explore underlying mechanisms, risks, and the pressing challenge posed by the lack of new antibiotics. Special attention will be given to the vital role of microbiology laboratories in tracking and preventing the spread of resistance.

Talk 2 - “Genome Sequencing (R)evolution”. Speaker: Prof. Massimo Delledonne – University of Verona. A journey through the evolution of DNA sequencing technologies, from human genomics to environmental biology.
Prof. Delledonne will highlight how these advances have revolutionized genetic analysis, making possible a range of tests and diagnostics that, just a few years ago, were unimaginable.

Final Session: Open Discussion. The event will conclude with an open discussion with attendees. With the contribution of the President and Secretary of OBERM, this interactive session will offer space for questions, insights, and dialogue on the workshop topics and other issues relevant to the profession of biologists.
