Cosmeceuticals: Chemistry from Cosmetics to Nutraceuticals

The Emilia Romagna section of the Italian Chemical Society (Società Chimica Italiana) is a regional division operating to promote the goals of the Italian Chemical Society, maintaining a continuous dialogue with universities, research institutions, schools, and local businesses. They represent a fundamental pillar for the dissemination of chemical culture and the engagement of the local scientific community.

Founded in 1909 and established as a Non-Profit Legal Entity by Royal Decree no. 480/1926, the Italian Chemical Society is a scientific association with over six thousand members. Members carry out their work in universities, research institutes, schools, industries, public and private research and testing laboratories, and as freelance professionals. Beyond their shared interest in chemical science, they are united by a desire to contribute to the cultural and economic growth of the country, the improvement of human quality of life, and the protection of the environment.

Session Details

The round table “Cosmeceuticals: Chemistry from Cosmetics to Nutraceuticals” will bring together academic and industry perspectives to explore the latest advances in research on personal care, health, and well-being. Through a dialogue involving two academic experts and two industry representatives, the discussion will examine the growing connections between cosmetics and nutraceuticals—two fields that increasingly converge in the study of bioactive ingredients, molecular mechanisms, and integrated strategies for skin health and protection.

The event will highlight the role of chemistry in the identification, design, and characterization of innovative functional substances, with particular attention to efficacy, safety, bioavailability, and advanced delivery systems. Further topics will include the sustainable valorization of natural resources, the use of biotechnology, product personalization, and the need for robust scientific evidence to support product claims.

The exchange between academia and industry will also offer an opportunity to reflect on regulatory challenges, technology transfer, and the future of innovation in this rapidly evolving interdisciplinary field, where expertise in chemistry, biology, pharmaceutical sciences, and manufacturing contributes to the development of effective, responsible, and sustainable solutions.
