BioSystems is a global company headquartered in Barcelona, operating in 17 countries and present in over 100 markets through partners and distributors. For 45 years, it has developed, manufactured, and marketed advanced analytical solutions for the clinical, food, veterinary, and environmental sectors, as well as for bioprocess monitoring. The company's mission is to innovate through high-performance instruments capable of ensuring data quality and reliability.

In the food sector, BioSystems offers automated analytical systems for food and beverage quality control. At the heart of this technology is the Y15 analyzer, based on spectrophotometry and the use of liquid, ready-to-use enzymatic or chemical reagents specifically designed for this instrument.

The system's versatility allows for multiple configurations and continuous monitoring of various parameters—both on single samples and large batches. Thanks to the instrument's adaptability and reagent specificity, key molecules can be analyzed across numerous sectors: winemaking, produce, dairy, cereals, as well as the meat and seafood industries.

Among its most significant innovations—and a testament to the high scientific caliber of its solutions—are the immunoturbidimetric method for gluten analysis across multiple matrices, which is AOAC-validated (Association of Official Analytical Collaboration), and the AOAC-validated enzymatic method for histamine analysis in fish.

Session overview

One of BioSystems’ major innovations is the development of a method for quantifying gluten resulting from cross-contamination across a wide variety of foods and beverages. The method is based on immunoturbidimetry, where latex nanoparticles are coated with monoclonal antibodies specific to the 33-mer sequence of prolamins—proteins that, together with glutelins, make up gluten.

The high antigen-antibody affinity ensures a direct and highly accurate quantification of gluten in the sample without requiring manual pipetting, lengthy incubations, or frequent washings and calibrations. The method was developed in accordance with the latest AOAC (Association of Official Analytical Collaboration) guidelines for validating analytical methods for allergens.

The use of ready-to-use liquid reagents, an easy extraction process that eliminates toxic compounds—removing the need for a fume hood—the wide variety of validated sample matrices, and full automation make it a unique system on the market. It is easily scalable for small and large companies as well as external testing laboratories.

BioSystems Y15 Automated Analyzer – Ready-to-use Reagents for Gluten Determination

The BioSystems Y15 analyzer is a Random Access automated system specifically designed to optimize chemical and enzymatic analysis in agri-food laboratories.

  • Operational Capacity: Up to 60 tests/hour in continuous analytical mode.
  • Matrix Flexibility: Direct analysis on musts, wines, fruit juices, preserves, chocolate, honey, seafood, meat, dairy, and cereal-based products.
  • Multiparametric: Capability to analyze various parameters—such as sugars, organic acids, histamine, gluten, and sulfites, among the main ones—on the same sample or across different samples in a single analytical run.

The BioSystems Y15 system represents the ideal solution for agri-food laboratories seeking to replace long and complex manual analyses. The synergistic interaction between the analyzer and the BioSystems reagent kits—developed, validated, and optimized specifically for this instrument—guarantees reproducible and standardized results.

Technical details of the gluten quantification kit:

  • Ready-to-use
  • Extraction solution that requires no fume hood
  • Measurement range: 2.4 – 200 ppm of gluten
  • Spike solution available
  • Fully automated

As previously described, this analytical method enables rapid and accurate gluten quantification across various liquid and solid matrices, streamlining everyday laboratory routines.
